Scoliosis! A painful but treatable condition

Scoliosis-Painful-but-treatableWe see clients suffer from all kinds of pain and our passion keeps us working and training on alternative techniques that we can integrate to help my clients. One of my clients had been suffering for a while and this is their story.

“I was diagnosed almost 3 years ago with Scoliosis. This gave me some relief knowing what was causing all my pain. My knees hurt, my neck would sometimes lock and my lower back was in constant pain. I had to roll out of bed as I could not sit straight up in the mornings. According to the orthopedic doctor, the outlook was not bright. They wanted to put me on pain medication, a body brace and possible surgery. None of this was me. I have always lived a healthy lifestyle and I had no intentions of changing, but what could I do? I started to do some research on the internet on alternatives to help with my Scoliosis, with no real success. One day, by chance, I was speaking to a co-worker concerning my plight and she said, “My daughter is now practicing massage. Let me ask her if she knows anything that could help you”. Her daughter recommended I call Surgical Alternative. That was one of the best phones call I ever made. Peggy, a senior therapist changed my life for the best. I have been going to Surgical Alternative for two and a half years now and thanks to her, I am back to doing all that I used to do, and more importantly, without Pain! If you have Scoliosis, this is where you need to be! No drugs, no body brace, no surgery. Peggy and Surgical Alternative gave me my active life back and I am forever in her debt. “

Sciatica- A pain you don’t have to live with!

Sciatica PainThere are many times, when I am crossing the parking lot of a store and I observe people walking with pain or discomfort.  I see them walking with a limp, walking slowly, holding a shopping cart and wincing because of the severe pain they are experiencing.  I often think about speaking with them to let them know that there are options for them to get better. I want to give them my business card and say, “We can help.”
A common pain that many people suffer from is sciatica or a pinched sciatic nerve.  It usually starts in the back as a minor pain and will eventually move all the way down your leg as the pain progresses. This is one of those pains that can get worse as it starts to travel and make its way down your leg.  The pain can be so intense, it can bring you to your knees.  When the nerve becomes really irritated, it begins to bother you while sitting or standing and can also be so painful that it keeps you up at night.  Most times. you can wiggle around until you find a position that isn’t as uncomfortable and the sciatica pain will ease. After a certain point, the pain you feel from the pinched sciatic nerve can seem like no position is a good position.  I hear people chalk it up to getting older but I am here to tell you “don’t buy into that!”
Our structural bodywork work treatment, which uses a combination of several techniques including deep tissue massage, applied kinesiology and CranialStructural Integration Therapy, addresses the cranialstructural (head and skeletal system) imbalances and tight muscles, allowing the bones to release bringing the pelvis back into balance and relieving the irritation of the sciatic nerve.
Surgical Alternative has been rehabilitating clients in severe pain from herniated discs, bulging discs, degenerative disk disease, serve lower back and shoulder pains, nerve entrapments, pinched sciatic nerve issues and many other symptoms that people think they either have to have surgery for or just deal with the pain.  Our main goal, is to educate people about options to just managing pain. Structural Bodywork- Benefits

deep tissue massage- massage therapyOverview

Deep-tissue massage is a specific type of massage therapy that concentrates on the deep layers of muscle and fascia in the body; and recommended by many doctors as a treatment option. By using deep finger pressure and slow, firm strokes, deep tissue massage is used to treat a variety of physical ailments.

Reduces Chronic Pain

The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that deep-tissue massage is more effective and affordable for relieving chronic pain than conventional medical remedies. Because deep-tissue massage increases the flow of blood through  the body, it also helps reduce inflammation that causes pain. Deep-tissue massage can also be an effect message to alleviate muscle tension that is often a side effect of chronic pain.

Improves Blood Pressure

Deep-tissue massage helps ease stress and tension, which can have a beneficial effect on blood pressure. According to a study cited by the University of Maryland Medical Center, people that have had a deep-tissue massage saw their systolic pressure drop by an average of 10.4 mm Hg and diastolic pressure drop an average 5.3 mm Hg. Deep-tissue massage helps to increase the body’s production of serotonin, the hormone that promotes happiness and good feelings.

Breaks Up Scar Tissue

Over time, deep-tissue massage therapy can help break up and eventually erase scar tissue in the body. It does this by improving lymphatic circulation and drainage to improve flexibility and range of motion in the affected area. Scar tissue is often associated with ongoing pain and stiffness, so deep-tissue massage can improve these symptoms. Massage therapy is recommended for people who are recovering from surgery.

Rehabilitates Injured Muscles

Deep-tissue massage can be an effective treatment for injured muscles. Because it facilitates the movement of toxins from the muscles and helps stretch tight or twisted muscle mass, deep-tissue massage can help promote healing. Because massage also helps relax muscles, it can reduce the pain caused by injuries, too. Deep-tissue massage is frequently used to rehabilitate sports injuries.

Stress Relief

For those people who suffer from chronic stress, and all of its various, possible side-effects like tension headaches, rigid shoulders and tight muscles; deep tissue massage can be a relief. During a session you can let it all go and give in to the healing. Once renewed and revitalized you’ll be able to face your challenges more equitably.
