Massage Improves Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

FibromyalgiaTenderFibromyalgia is one of the most difficult conditions to diagnose, and treatment for the pain associated with the disorder can be even more complicated to manage. Neuromuscular disorders like fibromyalgia (What is fibromyalgia?) can manifest itself in a number of different ways, encompassing a vast array of symptoms that require personal attention and a modified treatment plan, tailored to the client’s needs. The intensity of the symptoms experienced may also vary based on the individual activity level, sleep patterns, stress levels, and immune response. Other symptoms that characterize the disorder include headaches and chronic fatigue, all of which can be triggered by physical trauma, psychological trauma and even viral infections. Also, triggers seem to be heightened by fluctuating hormone levels associated with the hypothalamus.

As physicians and researchers continue to search for concrete causes of fibromyalgia, those suffering from debilitating pain are often left with more questions than answers.  While there is much yet to learn, there has been success integrating different treatment methods to manage pain with the goal of returning normal daily function to patients. Pharmaceutical medications such as Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Savella may be prescribed by physicians to help with pain management and other symptoms, but a more holistic approach seems to be more effective. Nutrition and exercise should be a part of every treatment strategy because they can help improve quality of sleep, biochemistry and balance hormone levels. In an article written for O magazine, Dr. Oz discusses some of the different approaches to treating fibromyalgia and advocates the supplement regime recommended by Jacob Teitelbaum, MD, director of the Fibromyalgia & Fatigue Center.

Massage therapy has become increasingly popular to treat pain associated with fibromyalgia. Specifically, a 2011 study using myofascial release techniques showed improvements in sleep quality and physical function while at the same time, reducing pain and anxiety levels. While the underlying causes of fibromyalgia remain a mystery, both concrete evidence and personal testimonials continue to show that massage can help improve the symptoms associated with the disorder.

“Avoid surgery. Eradicate Pain.” by Mike Matthew

Pain FreeAvoid surgery.  Eradicate pain.

by Mike Matthew

special to The Laker

Peggy Boyd, owner of Surgical Alternative, has found a way to end pain without costly and traumatic surgical procedures.  “My work goes far beyond massage therapy,” says Peggy.  “A better term for my work would be structural therapy.”

She graduated from massage therapy school in 1998 and started out doing sports massage.  Her work moved to a whole new level as she began to learn neuromuscular methods.  She saw significant results as she focused on rehabilitative massage.

“I began to see lasting changes in people’s bodies, in their posture and in their attitude toward their daily life,” says Peggy.  “Their quality of life improved as their pain was gone as a result of our work.”

“I want to help people eliminate pain, not just temporarily as is often what happens with standard massage therapy,” says Peggy.  “I want to get to the source of the problem and rehabilitate it.  Then the pain will go away long-term.”

“We want people to know this type of therapy exists,” says Peggy.  “We can help people avoid extreme physical actions like surgery.  This type of therapy also works well in conjunction with other non-invasive therapies like chiropractic, physical therapy, acupuncture, etc.”

The therapy as Surgical Alternative is designed to help people before they need surgery.  They also recognize that sometimes surgery is necessary.  This therapy can help clients recuperate faster, reduce their pain after surgery and help them get back to a normal range of motion pain-free.

“My focus is on rehabilitative work, helping people with injuries, and with those who want to prevent problems,” says Peggy.  “We pride ourselves on educating our clients about their bodies and helping them to see how their routines may be contributing to their painful conditions.”

Repetitive use injuries is a big problem they see all the time.  The therapists at Surgical Alternative help their clients understand where the source of their pain really is coming from.  The cause of their pain is not necessarily where the symptoms show up.

“We take the time to understand our clients lifestyle and work routines which often contribute greatly to their condition,” says Peggy.  “We can reverse many conditions without surgery.”

“Call us and make us explain to you how we can help release your pain,” says Peggy.

“We also see clients who fall between the cracks,” says Peggy.  “The doctor can’t find anything wrong, but the pain is real.  We can help clients find the source of the problem and release the pain long term rather than simply masking it with unnecessary medications.”  An example of this is hip pain.  Many times it is tightened muscles that are keeping a person’s structure out of balance. This improper alignment can cause uneven wearing at the joints resulting in pain.

Surgical Alternative offers packages as well as a monthly maintenance program for those who want to keep their body balanced.  Their typical session is 90 minutes and cost $120.  Peggy has been in business for 12 years and at her current location for a little under 4 years.  They have clients as young as 6 years of age and some well into their 90’s.  “We see everyone from triathletes with plantar fasciitis, to the person whom has lost range of motion and thinks that their body should not feel like this,” says Peggy.

Peggy and her staff want to help people get beyond merely existing and into truly living.

They’re having an open house on Saturday, August 2nd from 10 am to 4 pm.  They will also be celebrating the grand opening of their new store, Upward Spiral, where they’ll be offering products to support health and healing.  They’ll have product samples for you and giveaways too.

Surgical Alternative is located at 17886 N. US Highway 41 in Lutz.  You can reach them by phone at 813-948-6300 or visit their website at www.SurgicalAlternative.com to learn more or schedule an appointment.

10.) Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a disease that affects the central nervous system causing extreme pain and discomfort and many areas of the body independently and simultaneously.  Symptoms may include but are not limited to debilitating fatigue, insomnia, and joint stiffness.  Other symptoms include numbness/tingling and trouble swallowing.  For more information on fibromyalgia, please continue here, or CONTACT Surgical Alternative today for your evaluation.

9.) Rotator Cuff Injuries

The rotator cuff in your shoulder is made up of tendons, ligaments and muscle that work in unison to create the range of motion for your arm and upper back.  By injuring any of the pieces of the rotator cuff, you are not only causing inflammation and irritation, but you may also be doing further damage by not attending to your injury.  For more information of rotator cuff injuries and what surgical alternative can do to help, please continue here, or CONTACT US TODAY for your evaluation.

8.) Plantar Fasciitis

This is the most common cause of heel pain.  It is caused when your plantar fascia ligament becomes irritated, weakens, swells or strains.  Since it is the tissue that supports your arch, some people call it “fallen arches”.  Plantar Fasciitis causes moderate to severe foot pain and should be attended to as soon as possible.  If you would like to learn more about your condition, please continue here or CONTACT US today for your evaluation.

7.) Hiatal Hernias / Hiatus Hernia

A hernia is simply described as part of your internal body moving somewhere it does not belong.  Your Hiatus is an opening in your diaphragm and acts as a muscular wall between your chest cavity and your abdomen.  When your abdomen and stomach bulge up through the opening in your hiatus, this is called a hiatal hernia, or hiatus hernia.  There are two types of hiatal hernias : paraesophageal and sliding.  Though extremely uncomfortable, surgical alternative can treat these hernias and make your life more comfortable and manageable.  If you have a hiatal hernia and would like to learn more, please click here, or CONTACT us today for your evaluation and treatment.

6.) Tight Muscles / Stiffened Joints

We all get older and we all get LESS mobile each day.  Even with an active lifestyle and proper stretching, we cannot always be that “21 year old” that we all remember was invincible.  We have many clients that have been unable to do some of the things that they love due to aging muscles and joints.   Many include hunters, golfers, fisherman/fisherwomen, and other active oriented people.  With our treatment most of them are able to return to what they love.  Whether its casting a rod, climbing into a tree stand, or any other activity, we can help you return to the things in life that you have worked so hard to enjoy.  If you would like to learn more about joint stiffness or muscle tightness, please click here, or CONTACT us for your evaluation.

Whiplash – Symptoms and Facts

Heading into the summer holiday season, many of us will be traveling busy roads and highways, creating opportunity for more accidents.  One of the most common injuries from auto accidents is whiplash.  Though also possible in sporting and contact activities, the majority of these injuries are caused by automobile accidents.

Whiplash is caused by damage to the soft tissues in your neck like tendons, muscle and ligaments because of movement beyond your neck’s normal range of motion.  When these tissues are strained, they become inflamed which not only causes moderate to severe pain but also a limitation to your necks range of motion.  Doctor’s may also use terms such as cervical sprain, hyperextension injury, or cervical strain.

Symptoms of Whiplash include but are not limited to:

  • Upper back/Thoracic Pain
  • Head feeling too heavy to hold up.
  • Swelling in the neck area.
  • Tenderness around the neck region.
  • Difficulty moving your neck.
  • Headache
  • Neck pain
  • Shooting pains into your shoulders or back.
  • Muscle spasms (In the neck area)

If ANY of these symptoms become unbearable, SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY!  If you are involved in an accident, remember that even if you have some of these symptoms, there may be a risk that there could be orthopedic damage meaning that you have skeletal or bone damage, and need to see a surgeon immediately.

If you have been diagnosed with whiplash, Surgical Alternative can aide you in a speedy recovery while working with you to regain your range of motion through our SET bodywork sessions, as well as deep tissue massage and other methods adopted by our organization.  If you have any questions regarding your whiplash, please CONTACT US today to discuss your options!

Peyton Manning : Was Another Neck Surgery the Right Decision?

If you are at all a sports fan which many of us are, you have undoubtedly heard about the “Peyton Manning” effect and all of the fanfare that surrounds it. In the past weeks, he has been cleared to return to regular play, been involved in one of the most prolific free agency releases of all time, and pushed out an up and coming star in Tim Tebow to New York into a seemingly backup position.  All of these events stem from the neck surgery that kept Manning out all of last season while his beloved colts were battered by opponents all over the league. I am here to talk about that surgery, its effects, and its risks.

The reward for the surgery is quite simple: use of your neck for the remaining years of your life while maintaining a relative range of motion. My first question lies here. I am sure that Peyton Manning could afford only the best treatment, so why were so many surgeries needed? (3 separate surgeries) The answer lies in the root of the problem, a pinched nerve. Years of wear and tear taking hits from 285 pound monsters had taken its toll. By undergoing two unsuccessful surgeries, not only was he living in pain, but also causing further damage by not allowing for full recovery.

The risks are not as simple as the reward. Peyton Manning underwent what is called a single level anterior fusion, which involves removing an entire disk in your spine, and replacing it with a bone graft. The surgery is performed through an incision in the front of the neck, while a surgeon carefully works around every muscle to get to the disk.  There also runs a great risk by going under with anesthesia and creating a dependency on the pain medications after the surgery itself.

We would like to offer our surgical alternative to this surgery. By using our proprietary brand of therapy, we can ease your pinched nerves removing the need for surgery, down time, pain, and risks that come along with them.

If you have any questions regarding pinched nerves, or any other pain that you would like to overcome, please CONTACT US today or go to www.surgicalalternative.com for more information.

Sciatica (sciatic nerve)- An incapacitating pain

Everyone who has had a sciatica or pinched sciatic nerve knows the pain that can be caused. It sometimes start with an ache in your lower back that gradually seem to increase down your leg and farther it goes the more severe the pain becomes. What causes them? Sciatica issues can be caused overtime or from something more immediate. For instance, some of our clients conditions are caused from older trauma, i.e. sports injuries or accidents that we never really treated or fully recovered from.  Others can be caused from not being properly supported while sleeping or improper repetitive movements. Regardless how it may have occurred not doing anything to find a cure for your sciatica is not an option.Cures for pinched sciatic nerves can vary. Most people when they are in pain, seek medical advice without looking for other options often resulting in taking some type of prescription drug to provide temporary relief. Many issues that cause pain including sciatica issue are caused by the muscles. As muscles receive trauma they tighten causing them to pull your skeletal structure out of balance. Through our advanced bodywork and cranial session, we look to release those impediments and restore that body back to a rebalanced and homeostasis state.  In our years of practice we have had great results rehabilitating the conditions that cause pinched sciatic nerves.
We feel very fortunate and excited to do what we love to do, help others. We have been dealing with clients in severe pain for over 14 years now, that are suffering from herniated discs, bulging discs, hiatal hernias, peripheral nerve damage, nerve entrapments, pinched sciatic nerve issues, degenerative disk disease and many more symptoms that people think they either have to have surgery for or are told they just have to deal with the pain. We use a combination of deep tissues massages and cranial structural techniques to balance and align the body. The reason we started blogging was so that we could reach and help some of those people that suffer from these and many other painful conditions.   Surgical Alternative is now located in Lutz near New Tampa. We proudly service Tampa, St. Petersburg, Land O Lakes, New Port Richey, Wesley Chapel, Trinity and all surrounding areas. Please call today, or schedule your appointment online!

Carpal Tunnel Treatment-Unneeded Surgery?

Having worked with clients for many years that have been suffering from carpal tunnel, I’m still amazed that people are willing to do damage by cutting nerves and muscles.  Carpal Tunnel syndrome can be caused by a number of factors including age, medical conditions, or as many have experienced from of use and relative motions in the wrists and fingers most commonly associated with typing.

Symptoms start gradually, sometimes causing frequent burning, tingling, or itching numbness in the palm and the fingers, especially the thumb and the index and middle fingers. Some who suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome say their fingers feel useless and swollen, even though little or no swelling is apparent. A person with carpal tunnel syndrome may wake up feeling the need to “shake out” the hand or wrist. As symptoms worsen, people might feel tingling during the day. Decreased grip strength may make it difficult to form a fist, grasp small objects, or perform other manual tasks. In chronic and/or untreated cases, the muscles at the base of the thumb may waste away.

There are many cures for carpel tunnel that don’t require surgery.  The main issue I have is that even after surgery it is common for carpal tunnel to reoccur; therefore you just did damage to muscles through surgery that will probably have to be done again in the future.  A Surgical Alternative we have had great success curing carpal tunnel syndrome without surgery.  Before you have surgery please give us call.  We really can help.

We feel very fortunate and excited to do what we love to do, help others. Texting Thumb- More common than you think!

Almost everyone is using cellular phones and laptops on a continuous basis.  Even though these devices help us to create efficiency and speed in our communications, they also come with their own hazards.

About a month ago, I started to notice a lingering pain in my thumb.  I didn’t remember hurting it while working so I started to pay attention to how I was using it.  After a couple of days it clicked.  I was starting to develop “Texting Thumb” – a painful condition from overuse in repetitive movements while using technological devises like phones and computers.

Ten years ago, there was almost an epidemic of carpel tunnel pain.  Every pain relief clinic specialized in treatments for carpel tunnel.  This was because of the increasing use of computers at work with many people using a computer for most or all of their work day.  Now, this fad has died off a bit and more specific conditions like thumb pain from texting or the use of a laptop mouse pain are starting to emerge.

The good part is, we know exactly how to treat it.  Instead of massaging the area of pain and doing general work on the arm, I know that to fully release the contracted tissue causing the pain, I need to also release the shoulder and arm systematically.  Our myofasical release work with SET Bodywork, allows the tissues to let go of the habitual patterns they have formed through use.  There is a ripple effect down the arm as these tissues release and sometimes when we get down work specifically in the area of pain, the thumb for example, the releases prior have already initiated the release of the painful area before we even touch it.

Whether you suffer from neck pain, shoulder pain, frozen shoulder syndrome, tennis elbow, or other repetitive movement injuries, know that relief is possible. Being painfree means being more productive, because who cares about doing a good job when you are just waiting to go home. Bodywork may be the key to success. Or at least, what keeps us on good terms with our machines.

As an advanced deep tissue massage therapist in Tampa, I believe in helping people who live with chronic pain to learn how to also help themselves. Though our SET Bodywork ( a combination of advanced deep tissue massage and cranial structural techniques)is highly effective for many conditions such as herniated discs, bulging dics, scoliosis, plantar fascitis, heal spurs, myofascial relief and more, the therapist and the client are a team.
