A Migraine is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent moderate to severe headaches often in association with a number of autonomic nervous system symptoms. Typically the headache is unilateral, which means it affects only one half of the head. It is pulsating in nature and can last from 2 to 72 hours. Associated symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, increased sensitivity to light, or increased sensitivity to sound with the pain generally aggravated by physical activity. In some case people with migraine headaches perceive a visual, sensory, language, or motor disturbance which signaling the headache will soon occur.
They is no solid proof of what causes them but some believe they are due to a mixture of environmental and genetic factors. In a lot of cases it is also believed to be hereditary where almost two-thirds of cases run in families. Hormone levels may also play a factor, as migraines affect slightly more boys than girls before puberty, but about two to three times more women than men. Globally, approximately 15% of the population is affected by migraines at some point in life.
